Hold My Beer....

Long ago in a galaxy far, far away, I somehow managed to graduate from a small, private college with a bachelor's in Biology.  Now, I don't necessarily use my degree much in my current profession but I still carry an interest in the subject.  It's an excellent thought that in spite of what any individual person might believe, science continues to be true.  Nowadays, I try to keep a passing glance on new theories and discoveries in the field.  Although science-based books aren’t always the most riveting ever written, I occasionally enjoy a good read.  While you’re here, I’m going to go ahead and recommend Carl Sagan’s The Demon-Haunted World and How to Build a Time Machine by Paul Davies. I even manage to continue a small level of activism through protests and outreach websites like Citizen Science (Give it a try sometime).  In this meager way, I can prolong my involvement and aid my fellow man. The real conflict I have is my incredible sadness at t...

To Poor To Paint And To Proud To White Wash

Welcome back, everyone!  I sincerely apologize for not getting anything posted this week.  I have been such a busy little bee!  I finally went back to work full time at the daycare.  Go me.  I also started physical therapy for my neck/shoulder problem.  Cross your fingers that this works and I don't need surgery.   As previously stated, I will continue to post as I write.  I am stilling tinkering around with how frequent posts will be but, hopefully, the schedule will settle down soon.  Thanks for all of your patience with me.  Today, We’re going to go ahead and discuss one of the South's most prominent stereotypes.  For the sake of simplicity, I’m going to call it The Beverly Hillbillies Standard.  If you’ve never seen the old show, I’m positive YouTube has some clips lurking around.  Go on.  Take a Look.  Now, I’m not saying I don’t like The Beverly Hillbillies because I do.  I watched it ...

That Just Beats All I've Ever Seen

Grave of Cadet Cox. Jonesborogh, TN Hello Readers!  I would like to announce that it is currently my plan to post blogs as quickly as I can get them written.  Unfortunately, I have recently managed to fuck up my rotator cuff.  This injury is slowing down my writing/posting schedule.  This is due to pain and limitations on movement but predominantly because of the pain meds/muscle relaxers they have me on.  I want to sleep approximately 18 hours a day.  I have commented before on my constant tendency to find myself sick and/or injured.  Benefits of being an accident-prone hypochondriac.  I apologize in advance for the sporadic posting schedule that is sure to be had in the coming weeks.   As I mentioned in the previous post, Frequently Asked, one of the life skills I had to relearn after deconverting was how to prepare myself to deal with things like death and grief.  Dealing with the loss of a loved one is never an ea...

Frequently Asked #1

Welcome to the first edition of Frequently Asked! This is going to be an ongoing feature on the blog.  Some of the questions and/or statements covered here are things that have genuinely been said to my face.  That is the case for our topics for today.  Others could come from other Atheist writers, the great and powerful Google, or maybe even eventually from readers like you.  I promise to do my best to convey my answers in a clear and articulate manner.  Now, what are some questions that I get asked entirely too often?  How can you live life without Faith?/You have to have Faith in something. I would like to make it clear right here and now that I have plenty of faith in a variety of things.  I have faith in the fact that if my morning is not going so well then it will only get better when I spill coffee all over my work outfit or get stuck behind the school bus when I’m already running late.  When I come down with something, ...

Lord Willin' And the Creek Don't Rise

In order to start this story off right, I feel the need to go ahead and clear up a few points before we begin.  Because of the particular subject matter, I've elected to discuss, I will be taking steps to protect the privacy of the people and places that have played a part in my life.  No real names will be used.  Not even mine.  Although I do consider myself to be fairly open about my lack of belief, there are people in my life who for a variety of reasons I will probably get around to explaining at some point do not know.  Opinions down here have improved but airing your dirty laundry won't always make you any friends.  Now that that stuff is over and done with, let’s carry on with our tale! Long ago when the Earth was young, a child joyously came forth unto the world.  It was an entirely auspicious event.  At least we're going to pretend it was. Now you might be tempted to think that because I turned out this way that my famil...

I Ain't Seen You In A Month A Sundays

In an area where religion is often considered the default state of being, what is it like to make one's way through life without it?  How do you decide who and who not to tell? How do you break the news to Family? Friends? Random Strangers on the Street?  Are the reactions more often than not positive or negative?  How does it feel to be in the minority? What are the repercussions socially? Financially?  Do you face open prejudice? I hope to answer these urgent questions and many more by imparting my own personal experiences on the matter to you. Hello and Welcome to the Seersucker Social!  A lovely location where we get together to drink sweet tea and sip mint juleps while discussin’ the latest gossip and blessin’ everybody’s heart.   Yeah, not really.  I hope you didn't have your heart set on that. In fact, I'm here because I’ve decided to give you an idea of what atheism is like day to day. In the Bible Belt. Where I was ...
